SUISUN CITY — Suisun City is regaining its footing after the 2012 loss of redevelopment agency funds.
Sunday afternoon jazz returned to the waterfront during the summer.
The Veterans Hall on Main Street and the senior center both had major remodels.
The Kroc Center celebrated its first anniversary and is becoming a community center for residents.
The Suisun City Community Services Foundation is introducing the first in a series of collectible Christmas ornaments featuring city scenes.
A Walmart supercenter is under construction off Walters Road and Highway 12. The completion date is summer 2014.
The city’s historic waterfront continues to be a popular destination with its variety of dining and entertainment. It’s also home to many events, including Christmas on the Waterfront and Fourth of July fireworks.
The east half of Suisun City is largely residential. Many commuters call the area home and travel to work via Highway 12 and Interstate 80. Trains from the historic Amtrak station on Main Street take some residents to work.
The city’s history goes back to 1850, when schooner captain Josiah Wing found an island in the Suisun Marsh just offshore and built a wharf and warehouse. At the time, Fairfield founder and clipper ship captain Robert Waterman thought he controlled all of the shoreline in central Solano County.
Suisun City grew to become the major agricultural shipping point for the farms and orchards of Suisun Valley and Green Valley.
The transcontinental railroad came through town and cemented Suisun City’s role as the area’s center of commerce, social life and entertainment, with a half-dozen hotels located along Main Street by the early 1900s.
Fairfield gained ground on Suisun City during World War II. The construction of Interstate 80 through Fairfield bypassed Suisun City.
In the early 1980s, a survey of San Francisco Bay Area communities listed Suisun City as the least attractive place to live in the region.
Mayor Jim Spering devised a plan to redevelop all of the waterfront and the crime-ridden Crescent neighborhood.
Suisun City has a population of 28,000 people, About 39 percent are white, 20 percent black, 19 percent Asian and 20 percent Latino.
The median annual household income is about $72,000.
