FAIRFIELD — Solano County not only has planes, trains and automobiles, but buses and ferries as well.

Just for good measure, it has bike and pedestrian routes for those who like to get about on their own power.

People are on the move and the county has ways to get them where they are going. The transportation backbone is Interstate 80, which links the county with the central Bay Area and Sacramento. Interstate 680, Interstate 505, Highway 12 and Highway 37 are other major regional routes that pass through the county.

More than 90 percent of commuters travel to work by vehicle, according to Census 2010. Most drive solo, but van pools and car pools are also popular.

Others take advantage of express buses that leave Vallejo and Fairfield for Bay Area Rapid Transit stations.

The newest addition to the local bus world is Route 21 , which is run by the Napa Vine transit and travels between Fairfield-Suisun and Napa via Highway 12 in Jameson Canyon. Bus riders previously had to take an out-of-the-way route through Vallejo.

The Capitol Corridor trains stop in Suisun City on their way between Sacramento and San Jose, with a link to BART in Richmond. Suisun City has Solano County’s only active train station, but that could change by 2016. Fairfield plans to build a train station at Vanden and Peabody roads.

For those who like to travel by water, the Vallejo ferry has commute runs from the Vallejo waterfront to San Francisco. Plans call for constructing another Vallejo ferry stop across the Mare Island Strait from the present terminal, on Mare Island.

Solano County even offers options for those who have private planes. Pilots can use either the Nut Tree Airport in Vacaville or the Rio Vista Airport.
