FAIRFIELD — There’s not even any competition for the title of Solano County’s largest employer.
Year after year, Travis Air Force Base is the employment champion. It has such a large lead that no other employer can challenge it.
An estimated 13,400 people work at the base. That’s almost twice the population of Solano County’s smallest city, Rio Vista.
The base estimates its local economic impact is $1.6 billion annually. That’s among the reasons local cities and the county work closely with the base and lobby in Washington, D.C., to try to bring the base new missions.
But the county has a variety of other large employers also, far smaller than Travis, but still important to the local economy. They range from school districts to hospitals to biotech companies.
